GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 6 • 21 and we need some strong vocal leadership," offensive coordina- tor John Shoop said. "We need a guy out there who is going to rally these guys on the sideline and in the huddle. It's in both of them, it's in all of them. We've just got to keep trying to bring it out." But is Appleby or Etling better when it comes to those qualities? "They're both strong leaders, and all three guys (with freshman David Blough) have different person- alities," Shoop said. "While not neces- sarily identical, I wouldn't say one is better than the other, not at all." MORE MOSTERT? Former starting running back Raheem Mostert didn't get a single offensive snap against Iowa, but he should be back in the mix at Illinois. Senior Akeem Hunt will likely get his second consecutive start, but Mostert is slated to at least get some snaps, along with redshirt freshman Keyante Green. "I think (Mostert) will definitely play some this week," Shoop said. "We need him to play some this week. Akeem was having a strong game and we just didn't want to take him out. I'm the one who kept saying 'Keep Akeem in. Keep Akeem in.' We need to run more plays to get ev - erybody more reps." GOING BASE After consecutive weeks in which the Boiler- makers played a majority of snaps with five defen- sive backs on the field, Hudson's group used more three linebacker sets against the Hawk- eyes. Why? It needed to match up with the larger packages with multiple running backs and tight ends pre- sented by the Hawkeyes. And the 4-3 look was suc- cessful, in large part because Jim- my Herman, the strongside line- backer who is off the field in the five-DB scheme, played well. "The guys are coming in and watching film, we're having great football conversations and they're starting to take it to the field," Hud- son said. "And then they know the adjustments, that's the thing. And they're coaching themselves. We're starting to get a little bit of evi- dence that it works if you do it ex- actly the way you're supposed to." DEALING WITH THE TWIST Purdue struggled to contain the Hawkeyes on the edge and interior when Iowa twisted its end and tackle, letting pressure col- lapse the pocket on Etling. He took four sacks, although some could be pinned on him for holding the ball too long. "We were real conscious of the inside two guys that they have," Shoop said. "We tried to stay three- on-two as much as we could in there. We've got to get in more for- mations where we can crack those guys and we can slow them down a little bit. "But ultimately, it wasn't mega- twists or anything like that. We've got to block five techniques (de- fensive ends) in the pass rush." j Tom Campbell The offensive line must do a better job of handling twists by defensive lines — the movement contributed to several sacks and pressure last week. Purdue likely will adjust with different protections against Illinois. ... all the services ... all the food ... all the comfort ... all the fun YourWindow_GoldandBlack_August10_electronic.indd 1 8/20/2010 2:26:24 PM
