GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 6 • 26 BY ALAN KARPICK AKarpick @GoldandBlack.com M ark Herrmann is proof you can go home again. The decision by Pur- due's Krannert School of Management to hire one of its own as a development director in August couldn't have made more sense. Sure, when long-time Purdue fans think of Her- rmann the first thing that comes mind probably isn't the fact he is a graduate of one of Purdue's most presti- gious academic schools. Af- ter all, Herrmann left Purdue in 1981 with his diploma in hand but also as the NCAA's all-time leading passer and MVP of three-straight Boilermaker bowl victories from 1978-80. "Let's remember I was a stu- dent first, and Krannert was my de- gree," Herrmann said on "Gold and Black LIVE" late last month. "I have the opportunity to come back and give back and to continue to help that school grow in stature and be able to get the best of the best in the program. I am thrilled to be back because it couldn't come at a better time in my life." Tim Newton, the voice of Purdue football, is director of exter - nal relations and communications at the Krannert school in his day job. As a college student at Purdue, Newton watched Herrmann play and knows what to expect from the former Boil- ermaker star. "One thing I've learned from Mark and being around him back then and here is that there is very little wasted motion," Newton said. "He is very calm and always seems in control, and he is a very easy person to talk to. He is very professional at all times and he acts in person the way he played on the field, very efficiently." Herrmann made his share of big plays, but he also threw with record-setting accu - racy (see box on Page 27). But his career was a work in progress as talent was developed around him. He did what was necessary to get the job done, whether having to carry more of the offensive load in his freshman (1977) and senior (1980) seasons or be the leader of a more balanced attack in 1978-79. Herrmann's coach, Jim Young, looks back at Herrmann's playing career through the lens of nearly 35 years and says Herrmann's demean - or had a lot to do with his success on the field and will translate well into his new gig. Young threw Her- rmann into the fire in his first game as a true freshman, and he started all but one game (due to injury) for the remainder of his four years in West Lafayette. "His maturity is what I remem- ber most about him, especially early in his career at Purdue," said Young earlier this week from his home in Tucson, Ariz.
