7 25 Issue 67 / 2014 DRUM & BASS / DUBSTEP guestlist.net HI LINDSEY, THANKS SO MUCH FOR TALKING TO US TODAY, IT'S AMAZING THAT YOU'VE PACKED IT IN TO SUCH A CRAZY SCHEDULE! HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING THE UK SO FAR, DESPITE THE WEATHER? Lindsey Stirling – I've gotta say, if it was like this all year round, you wouldn't be able to stop me from moving to the UK! SO I WAS WATCHING YOUR PERFORMANCE AND I WAS AMAZED AT THE ENERGY LEVELS. DO YOU GO TO THE GYM A LOT TO STAY IN SHAPE? OR DO YOU JUST DRINK LOADS OF CAFFEINE? [Laughs] I actually don't drink caffeine. Honestly, it's just doing shows that keeps me in super good shape. We got off a nine month tour last week doing five or six shows a week, an hour and a half set at night and its the best shape I've ever been in! THATS VERY IMPRESSIVE. YOU HAVE SUCH A UNIQUE, UNUSUAL STYLE, ITS SO INCREDIBLE TO DO THAT WITH A VIOLIN. You know, it was when I was in my late teens. I entered a load of talent competitions to try and earn some money for college. There were several violinists, and I just thought " How am I going to make myself stand out?". I decided, instead of using the violin the way its always been done, that I'd make it fit my personality, make it fit me, so I could showcase who I am. I started writing music that inspired movement. Its funny, looking back at my old videos of my performances, I was so awkward, but I just knew it could work and I kept working through the awkward stage. Now I can't stand still, I just HAVE to move when I play! YOUR DANCING IS SUCH A BIG PART OF THE PERFORMANCE, DO YOU CHOREOGRAPH IT AT ALL? Some of it. Not so much tonight, but normally we have two back up dancers and for half the set its very choreographed with the two of them, and then the other half of the set is very whimsical, I just go wherever I want to go. SO TONIGHT YOU THOUGHT YOU'D JUST GO WITH IT? Yeah! [Laughs] Exactly, I just though I'd be a free spirit tonight. IT WAS GREAT. OBVIOUSLY YOU WERE A CONTESTANT ON AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHERE THAT WOULD LEAD, EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN'T WIN? No. I mean I had pretty high excitement for that, I though 'Oh this is my big break, my chance to be seen by the world' ... I was heartbroken. I just didn't understand how I would ever make it, but I learnt that you just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other, just have to keep on walking. Since getting kicked off the show I can't believe where I've gone, its like, holy cow, I'm so much better off. It was the best thing that ever happened to me because it helped me see the bigger picture. |YOU HAVE SUCH A UNIQUE STYLE, CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH IT'S DEVELOPMENT? Oh man, its funny because I started out playing rock, I was really into rock, then around the time of America's Got Talent I started messing about with Hip Hop tracks. Around that same time I was trying out all these different styles shortly before and after the show. Then, when I started producing my own stuff, it was really fun to take all these influences and then throw them all into the style that I now have. It's like, now I have my own style, I don't have to play along with what everyone else has! HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT WRITING YOUR SONGS? I usually start with a very clear vibe or emotion I want to put down, or I'll think, 'I want to start it like this' and then build it from there. Then I'll play around with stuff and decide if I like things or not, then make it into a skeleton track. Then I'll write a violin part over it. I like to think of it almost like an orchestra, made up of the bass and stuff, with all these different sections. OK, LAST ONE. YOU'RE GOING ALL OVER THE WORLD, ASIA, EUROPE, AUSTRALIA. I WAS JUST WONDERING, AND IT MIGHT BE QUITE A HARD CHOICE, BUT WHERE HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO PLAY SO FAR? Actually, I would say two places. Paris! Those fans in Paris, they're just so passionate and they love to show it. They'll come to concerts and sing along with the violin melodies! And Australia as well, they really feel it as well. I think in Australia, because they're so isolated, they get so excited and it really shows. " She first made waves with her electric YouTube covers of well known songs, then hit the mainstream reaching the quarter finals of America's Got Talent. Now, everyone's favourite dancing Dubstep violinist is winning over fans around the world and, most importantly, proving Sharon Osborne and Piers Morgan wrong. Her first album was a huge success, with the single 'Crystallize' having 100 million views on YouTube, and she's now preparing to release her second. Follow @LindseyStirling
