Sand Filters These days sand filters seem to be the filter of choice. They are efficient and need very little maintenance apart from backwashing when the pressure rises. When pressure increases by an average of 40kpm your filter needs backwashing. After backwashing the pressure should decrease by the same amount of pressure. Over time the pressure drop will indicate when the filter is due for a sand change. 7 Neptune Sand Filters are designed by Australians for Australian conditions Back washing instructions 1. Turn off the pump. Also turn off the salt chlorinator if you have one. 2. Turn the handle on top of the filter to the back wash position. 3. Now turn the pump on. 4. Run for only 2-3 minutes or until the sight glass becomes clear. (This causes the water to run through the filter in reverse, flushing contaminants and dirt from the filter. It happens very quickly, and uses a lot of water because it is flushing it away to waste). 5. Now turn the pump off. 6. Turn the handle on top of the filter to the rinse position. 7. Turn the pump on. 8. Let it rinse for approximately 30 seconds. 9. Turn the pump off. 10. Turn the handle on top of the filter to the filter position. 11. Turn the pump back on.
