Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at memorable covers
while reflecting what was going on at the time.
In 2003, Purdue had a run-first, let-the-defense-dominate philosophy. But on Oct. 18, 2003, of-
fensive coordinator Jim Chaney had junior quarterback Kyle Orton air it out 55 times against No. 14 Wisconsin.
It was just enough for the Purdue to escape with the win as kicker Ben Jones had a game-winning 18-yard field
goal with three seconds left as 13th-ranked Purdue won 26-23 in Madison. Orton completed 38 of those 55
passes for a career-best 411 yards, a yardage Orton surpassed a year later.
Also in the Oct. 23, 2003 issue was coverage of Purdue's midnight basketball practice as Coach Gene Keady
was about to embark on his 24th season at the helm. A crowd of about 2,500 was in attendance.
