ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 2 119 f Jones has been willing to work for years. Early on at Hamilton Southeastern — she played only on the fresh- man team in her first year — she had to fix the kinks in her game, getting private sessions on the side to work out a wonky hitting motion. "I just wanted to learn," she said. "I understood. I don't have to be the superstar of the team or anything, I just want to have good relationships with my teammates to make sure everyone is playing as well as they can." Jones has taken that attitude to Purdue. In 2011, when she thought she was destined to redshirt — Shondell had told her that would likely be the case — she adjusted quick- ly to being thrown in, not flinching at the change in plans. "I knew that I wasn't the go-to player or anything, but I had basically learned in high school and club that if you make it easier on your teammates, the better everyone looks and you keep your spot," she said. "Freshman year, I really didn't get set (to) that much, actually, at all, but I thought 'You know what, if I draw the block and hold my middle for just half a second, that will help my outside hitters so much,' so that was my game plan the whole season." Adelaja, a sophomore middle blocker, finds Jones' de- meanor admirable. "She's not fazed by a lot," Adelaja said. "You can tell that even though she's a senior – and coaches put a lot of pres- sure on seniors to lead the team and leave a legacy before they leave – but KiKi's like 'OK, that's my job, so I'm going to go do it.' "She's not one of those people who gets stressed, like, 'Oh my gosh, there's school and volleyball and I'm a senior and have to do this and that.' She's not one of those people; she's always chill, taking things one at a time." j When I say "good," you say "neighbor."
