126 ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 2 f in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Champion- ships. She won the consolation final of the 200 breast- stroke (2:08.28) at the NCAA Championships with a time that ranked as the fourth fastest at the national cham- pionship that night. She added a third individual school record at the Big Ten Championships when she swam the 200 individual medley in 1:58.94. The North Barrington, Ill., native was primed for a standout junior season after she broke her own record in the 100 breaststroke at the Purdue Invitational in No- vember with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 59.34. "Going into my junior season, I put a lot of pressure on myself because as a sophomore I accomplished X amount and I wanted to live up to that," Fogle said. "I was confi- dent but I also had a lot of pressure on myself. Then, the injury happened." Fogle said the way her bones were formed and her hips were aligned set the stage for the labral tears, while it was also a degenerative effect from swimming breaststroke for so many years. She underwent surgery in December and began the long road to recovery, which included two rehab sessions a day, seven days a week at times with her trainer, Stephanie Leech of Purdue Sports Medicine. "You want to be there and help somebody like that in every way you can," women's swimming and diving coach John Klinge said. "It's really difficult to watch someone go through what she did." Fogle said she tried hard to stay involved with the team shortly after the injury, but at a certain point she started to feel like a recluse since she wasn't able to compete. "After a while, you don't want to spend time with the team because it's hard," Fogle said. "It's hard to watch them swim and accomplish what you want to accomplish. You have to remember you're going to come back. At that point, you can either leave the team for good or you can tell yourself you're going to recover and you're going to come back." Fogle chose the latter and swam for the first time com- petitively since her injury at a club meet in Kentucky in June. She viewed it as a key step in her recovery process. "It was fun," Fogle said. "It wasn't a setting like the Big Tens or anything, but I was still nervous before it started. I had to remind myself it was the first time I was back in a meet." She said she's "more than 100 percent healthy" and as mentally and physically as healthy as she's ever been. Klinge said that has been apparent this fall in the pool, where he expects Fogle to compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley again this year in addition to swimming the second leg of the 200 medley relay. "To me, she's physically looking as good as she did," Klinge said. "In every way, it seems like she's come through these injuries in a better place than she was. I think she can pick up right where she left off and just keep moving forward and doing even better." Fogle plans to apply for a hardship waiver for a sixth year of eligibility, which would allow her to compete for Purdue for another two seasons. Although she noted she has to take into consider- ation what her body's been through and what she's been through mentally, she's kept her expectations high. She didn't go through the recovery process for nothing. "With the training and the tools that I've had to recov- er from … I have confidence that I can pick up and then exceed what I had before the injury," Foglesaid. "I'd like to exceed what my times had been. More than anything, it's just regaining my love for the sport and enjoying my time at Purdue." j 2014-15 Men's, Women's Swimming Schedule Oct. 17 MIAMI (OHIO) (Men's W 140-101; Women's W 199-94) Oct. 18 Indiana Intercollegiates (1st of 9 men's, 1st of 10 women's) Oct. 24 at Ohio State, vs. Cincinnati (Women's only) 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at Miami (Ohio) (Men's only) 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at Notre Dame 1 p.m. Nov. 7 Western Kentucky 5 p.m. Nov. 20-22 Minnesota Grand Prix (Men's Swimmers) All Day Nov. 21-23 Ohio State Invitational (Men's Divers, Women's Swimmers and Divers) All Day Dec. 16-21 USA Diving Winter Nationals* All Day Jan. 9 Michigan State (Divers) 11 a.m. Jan. 10 Michigan State (Swimmers) 12 p.m. Jan. 24 Indiana 1 a.m. Jan. 30-31 Big Ten Triple Duals# All Day Feb. 18-21 Big Ten Championships (Women's)^ All Day Feb. 21-22 Michigan First Chance (Swimmers)$ All Day Feb. 25-28 Big Ten Championships (Men)% All Day Feb. 28 Boiler-Make-it NCAA Last Chance Noon March 8 Ohio State Last Ditch (Men's) Noon March 12-14 NCAA Zone C Diving Championships* All Day March 19-21 NCAA Championships (Women's)@ All Day March 26-28 NCAA Championships& (Men's)% All Day * Columbus, Ohio # Minneapolis, Minn. $ Ann Arbor, Mich. % Iowa City, IA @ Greensboro, N.C.
