ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 2 27 f "Bryson Scott is a physical specimen, he has fast- twitch muscles, he's strong, explosive. We have to put that to use, on the defensive end, in transition. But he has to be a pass-first point guard for us. And we have talked with him on when to be aggressive, when not to be aggressive, to get other people involved. I have always said that about him, 'We have got to put his physical attributes to work for us.' But he has got to be hooked up and understand the importance of running our team. And that is a sacrifice he is going to have to make. It will not (go) well for him if he can't make that sacrifice, because we need a person in that posi- tion who is going to get the ball to Dakota Mathias or Kendall Stephens for jumpers or an athletic wing like Raphael Davis, Vince Edwards or Basil Smotherman, not to mention getting the ball inside to A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas. … Bryson Scott has an unbelievable opportunity in front of him, but he has to be able to hold on to those reins in the fashion that we are talking about to really help this team. "Basil Smotherman needs to be that energy guy. He was really up and down last year, and I really equated that to his energy. He has got to have energy, come in every day with it, because that is such a strength for him when he does that. His athleticism comes out. When he gets out on the break, drives the basketball, causes havoc on defense, it will really benefit us and really benefit him when he gets that consistent level of play across the board." Gold and Black: For all three, the talent seems to be there. Painter: "Yes, each one is a little different, but it's about learning the process of what each one needs to do to become successful. And as you get into recruiting or coaching, the talent gets less and less (important) and the production gets more and more. Instead of say- ing, 'Hey, this guy is really talented,' it's, 'Well, is he really productive? "For all three of those guys, as well as the whole team, that is going to be very important. How produc- tive are you? Quit telling me, 'Hey I'm better than him.' Are you more productive than him? Can you make an open shot? Can you make a free throw? Can you take care of the basketball? Can you handle coaching? Those things are not a little bit important, they are a lot im- portant. Those are going to be key factors for anyone wanting success at this level." Tom Campbell Painter hopes his young players can become mature play- ers, especially those in the sophomore class.
