GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 9 • 24 MINNESOTA 39, PURDUE 38 TOP PLAYERS No.1 Minnesota running back David Cobb: Cobb may not be as flashy as some of the other highly touted backs in the Big Ten, but he sure is productive being patient. Cobb didn't have a run longer than 19 yards against the Boilermakers but kept pounding and pounding away. In the end, it meant a 194-yard performance in which he aver- aged 5.5 yards per carry. No.2 Minnesota cornerback Cedric Thompson: Thompson had intercep- tions on Purdue's first and last offensive snaps. The Gophers' pressure helped on the first, as Appleby got hit, allowing Thompson to snatch a fluttering ball to set up Minnesota's first touchdown. Thompson did work on second, making a nice play to pick off Appleby in the fourth quarter. No.3 Purdue running back Raheem Mostert: The se- nior made the most of his limited offensive opportunities, breaking a pair of big runs en route to his second career 100-yard rush- ing day. Mostert's 42-yard, second-quarter touchdown gave Purdue a lead, and his 69-yard rush put the Boilermakers at the 1-yard line in the third quarter. On five car- ries, Mostert gained 115 yards. No.4 Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner: The comple- tion percentage wasn't great (50 percent), but Leidner completed crucial passes downfield in the third quarter to get the Gophers back in the game, and he also seemed to run the zone-read game to perfection, rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown. No.5 Purdue quarterback Austin Appleby: In the end, Appleby was lamenting the plays he didn't make — the fourth-down conversion, the second intercep- tion — but he threw three touchdown passes and rushed for 79 yards and another score. j THE HILL GROUP REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO hillgrp.com We're Illinois' largest mechanical contractor … and proud to have 38 outstanding Purdue alumni on our HVAC/Plumbing team.
