GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 9 • 27 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com A s Buffalo enters its bye week, the Bills are in position to make the playoffs, their first postseason trip since 1999. And they have Kyle Orton to thank. Since taking over as Buffalo's starting quarterback, the veteran has guided the Bills to victories in three of the last four games as they sit 5-3 halfway through the season. In his four games, the 31-year-old has 1,128 yards pass- ing with nine touchdowns and three inter- ceptions, with a QB rating of 104.0. He's also had a couple other firsts: Orton joined Oakland's Jeff George (1997) as the only QBs since 1960 to have three straight games with 283-plus yards passing in his first three starts with a team, according to STATS. Also, according to ESPN Stats & Info, Or- ton became the first quarterback since Bub- by Brister for the Steelers in 1990 to throw four or more touchdowns on 10 or fewer completions. Orton did so Sunday, when he had four touchdowns on a 10-of-17 day in a win at the Jets. The Bills have appreciated the profes- sionalism Orton has brought to the team since signing there after the preseason. "He's extremely hard working," Bills cen- ter and captain Eric Wood told the Buffalo News. "There's no player that puts in more hours at the facility than him, and it shows in his preparation and his play. He's a fun guy to be around, cracks jokes from time to time. But he's about the busi- ness and working hard, and he holds people account- able." Purdue's two NFL start- ing quarterbacks both had good days on Sunday, with Orton leading the Bills to a win over the Jets and Drew Brees leading the Saints to a win vs. Green Bay. The duo combined for 549 passing yards and sev- en touchdowns. For Brees, it was a nice bounce-back game after his late interception vs. Detroit the week previous helped spur a Lions' comeback. But he said on Sunday, fol- lowing the win over the Pack- ers, that he wasn't looking for redemption. "Just the next game," he told NOLA.com. "The most important game because it's the next game. No better way to get back on track." j Orton Has Bills Rolling Buffalo Bills Kyle Orton's four touchdowns helped him pull off a rarity Sunday, as they came in only 10 completions in a win over the Jets.
