GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 9 • 37 BY BRIAN NEUBERT BNeubert@GoldandBlack.com I n Purdue's first scrimmage two week- ends ago, Kendall Stephens was a shadow of what he showed last season and certainly of what he intends to show this season, going 1-of-13, 0-for-8 from three-point range. "Last scrimmage, I think I just got a little too focused on the three and let it impact the rest of my game," the Big Ten All-Freshman pick from a year ago said. Last weekend's scrimmage then rep- resented a 180. Stephens made 11-of-16 shots, 8-of- 13 from three, and scored 32 points in 40 minutes of play. "I think the difference was just my shots were going down a little more and I was looking to attack more than with just the three-pointer," he said. "I'm just read- ing the defense. I think I did a better job with that, and in practice. I just have to carry it over to the games." Stephens headlined a sophomore class that stood out offensively during Purdue's second scrimmage. Bryson Scott finished with 20 points, three steals and six assists with just one turnover, looking the part of the more conventional point guard Purdue's asked him to become. "I'm just playing within myself, know - ing my strengths, knowing when to go, when not to go," Scott said. "I think I'm do- ing a better job with that and getting my teammates involved. I feel like I got my teammates involved and that opened up things for me." Forward Basil Smotherman, mean- while, made four three-pointers, includ- ing a buzzer-beating game-winner. Offense ruled the day in Mackey Arena in a scrimmage open to the gen- eral public. Collectively, Purdue made 20 threes on 47 tries and shot 54 percent overall. "I thought as the scrimmage went on, our defense slipped," Painter said.
