At this year's Admin Professionals conference in Toronto, a panel of executives was asked about the term "offi ce spouse," and what it means for their EAs. Ian Clarke, CFO, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd: You're spending more time with your EA than your wife. You get to know each other. It is a relation- ship. You're close; it's just a sign of being that close, that tight-knit. Marnie Dicker, Executive VP, Infrastructure Ontario: I call them sisters. My assistants are my sisters and they're as important to me as my sister. I've never had a male assistant—maybe they would be my brother. I person- ally fi nd the term (offi ce spouse) derogatory and offensive. I don't use it. I was once accused of being my president's offi ce spouse and I fi nd that offensive. Truly I have two blood sisters and I have two other sisters. One of them is my nanny... and my other sister is my assistant because I would not be able to function without her. Arlene Campbell, General Manager, Sales and Event Man- agement, Exhibition Place: I fi nd the term very 1950s. I don't like it as a term. Because of proximity that type of relationship does exist. There are boundaries. It's not a term I like.
