36 COMMERCIAL CARRIER JOURNAL | NOVEMBER 2014 technology O rbcomm in the past few years has acquired two of the largest providers of cold-chain trailer tracking systems, StarTrak and Par Logistics, and has devel- oped new hardware capable of tracking any type of asset. More recently, it launched a next-gen- eration OG2 network of satellites. The primary reason for making these investments is to provide fleets a common platform to connect to all of their assets across diversified lines of business, including flatbed, reefer, intermodal and dry van. During the American Trucking Associations' annual Management Conference & Exhibition in San Diego, Orb- comm announced a new product for its ma- chine-to-machine communications platform: the GT 1100-Chassis Tracking Solution. The design pairs Orbcomm's solar-pow- ered GT 1100 tracking and monitoring device with its PS 100 proximity sensor and custom mounting bracket. The GT 1100-CTS provides chassis location with load status – container mounted or unmounted – to help fleets increase asset utilization through faster equipment turn times and more efficiency through accurate billing and enhanced lane and yard planning. The device uses a cellular modem with a satellite option. The device connects to the tractor's power source and its solar rechargeable battery for uninterrupted connectivity. – Aaron Huff Maintenance software, allowing fleets to manage maintenance proactively with real-time details such as vehicle fault codes and lo - cation, helping to improve safety and reduce downtime. r PeopleNet announced new integrations with TMW Systems' TotalMail version 14.30+ that provide PeopleNet and TMWSuite users with improved access to information related to workflow stops and cycle times to help improve fleet efficiency and utilization. r Direct Freight Services and TMW Systems announced new integrations for TMWSuite and TruckMate via TMW's Freight Board Interface module. A t the American Trucking Associations' annual Management Conference & Ex- hibition in San Diego last month, Magellan – a company known for its consumer GPS navigation devices – announced an expan- sion of its fleet product portfolio. Magellan's RoadMate RC9496T-LMB is an Android GPS truck navigation device that includes electronic driver logs. The 7-inch tablet has a serial port, dash mount and black-box cable and connects to a supple- mental desktop tool, the Magellan Fleet Manager, designed to enable central office management of the device's software as well as map updates, route planning, visibility to driver logbook status and cloud content that includes real-time fuel pricing and weather information. The Fleet Manager software is compatible with any Android device. Some of the device's navigation features include the ability to customize truck routes based on vehicle profiles for height, weight, width, length and hazmat restrictions. The software is designed to optimize stops for the most efficient route or to allow drivers to plan stops in the order they want. Traffic alerts can be sent directly to the GPS unit to let drivers plan more precise travel times and estimated times of arrival by avoiding congestion and other delays. The device's Junction View feature displays a realistic image of the road and highway signs to help guide drivers to the correct lane for safe merging and exiting. – Aaron Huff .BHFMMBOT3PBE.BUF3$5-.#JTBO "OESPJE(14USVDLOBWJHBUJPOEFWJDFUIBU JODMVEFTFMFDUSPOJDESJWFSMPHT Magellan adds electronic logging to truck navigation device 0SCDPNNT(5 $54JTEFTJHOFEBOE FOHJOFFSFETQFDJñDBMMZ UPGBDJMJUBUFDIBTTJT NBOBHFNFOUGPS PXOFSTBOEPQFSBUPST PGBOZTJ[FóFFU Orbcomm expands M2M platform to intermodal chassis
