month. Among those families, there are more than 1,300 children. "We have been confined to this base- ment since 1985," says Alyse Barbash, who took on Haven From Hunger's executive director role four years ago. When she ar- rived, she "looked around and said, 'Man, we don't have enough room.'" Barbash is so soft-spoken that you often have to lean forward to hear what she's say- ing. But there's a conviction in her words that rings loud and clear: She wants a better space for the people that Haven From Hun- ger serves. She wants a place where clients feel welcomed, empowered, and dignified She wants to give clients the resources to help themselves, not simply a bag of grocer- ies or a sandwich. She wants to get out of the basement. In February 2014, Haven From Hunger bought the building whose basement they have inhabited for nearly 30 years.
