There are certainly people who are skeptical of food pantry clients, accusing them of working the system or not wanting to get a job. But in reality, the vast majority of clients have genuine need, especially the children. "There's not one kid that asked to be born into this," Barbash says. "No child asked to be hungry." Although it's only early October at the time of this writ- ing, Barbash already knows how she, her husband, and their two teenage children will be spending Thanksgiving Day: at Haven From Hunger, dining with some of its clients, thanks to the generosity of Henry's Market in Beverly, which provides dinner. "My big, fancy Thanksgiving meal is here with about 72 family members," Barbash says with a quiet smile. Haven From Hunger will host Christmas dinner, too, as well as distribute turkeys, hams, and side dishes for both holidays. "Generally, it is a lot of homeless people who have no place to go," Barbash says. On Christmas there will be caroling and a Santa Claus who'll give gifts like gloves, socks, and blankets to the clients. "It may not sound like much to some people," Barbash says, "but it's a lot to them." Hopefully, Christmas future will someday bring a newly renovated building, too. havenfromhunger.org ● n 156 Philanthropy ne Renderings courtesy of Siemasko + Verbridge Dream Design: Siemasko + Verbridge have proposed a dining room concept for the renovated space.
