This time, it's Melvin Gordon, who leads No. 25 Wisconsin into its noon Saturday kickoff at Ross-Ade Stadium. The Badgers seem to have elite running backs every single year and Gordon certainly fits that bill, potentially to the point he can be considered a fringe Heisman con- tender if he finishes the season out strong. "The thing is he is really bal- anced," said John Veldhuis, who covers Wisconsin for Rivals.com's BadgerBlitz.com. "He is effective between the tackles, which is what Wisconsin backs have been, but he does a lot of damage on the edge because he is a very fluid runner and good in the open field and he is faster than you would think for a guy with his playing height and weight. "He has been playing well enough where he will garner some consideration for the Heisman. In today's day and age even if the Badgers were undefeated, and you did not have (backup) Corey Clem - ent, I would doubt that he would win, but it would not surprise me to see Gordon in New York City with the rest of the nominees for that award. I think he is a very seri- ous contender for a lot of other na- tional awards like the Doak Walker. A lot of that depends on how Tevin Coleman performs at IU, if (Nebras- ka's) Ameer Abdullah's injury ham- pers him and holds him off a little while longer, but along with the offensive line, the running game is performing as well as you would have expected in the preseason." Gordon likely will break the 1,300-yard plateau against the Boilermakers this weekend.
