Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look
back at memorable covers while reflect-
ing what was going on at the time.
The 2004 season had taken a turn for the worse and
the Boilermakers needed to stop the bleeding. Purdue had
jumped to as high as No. 5 in the rankings, but gut-wrenching
losses to Wisconsin, Michigan, Northwestern and Iowa had
left Coach Joe Tiller and Co. wondering where the next win
was coming. This Nov. 19, 2004 cover image of Kyle Smith
(7) and Brent Grover running off the field after an Ohio State
turnover seemed to capture the sense of joy (and relief ) that
the Boilermakers had enough to beat the Buckeyes, which
they did 24-17 to earn their eighth-straight bowl bid.
