WISCONSIN 34, PURDUE 16 TOP PLAYERS No.1 Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon: Hazell called Gordon "the best player I've seen in a long time carrying the ball." Gordon averaged a whopping 8.2 yards per carry on 25 of them, gaining 205 yards. He, simply, was difficult to tackle, whether he was shooting through the hole with a whoosh, as Hazell described, or using his ability to lean and balance to keep defenders away from his legs. He also leaped over Leroy Clark to end his 27-yard touch- down catch. No.2 Wisconsin defensive end Vince Bie- gel: Biegel nearly single-handedly kept Purdue from a comeback. He had three sacks in the sec- ond half alone, often manhandling Purdue left tackle Da- vid Hedelin. No.3 Purdue safety Landon Feichter: Fe- ichter nearly single-handedly brought Purdue back. For the second consecutive week, he forced two turnovers in the second half, getting a fumble and an interception, and he also had a team-high 12 tackles. No.4 Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave: Stave wasn't sup- posed to be the concern. But from the first play of the game when he executed a play-action 28-yard completion, he was efficient and effec- tive. He completed 19 passes for 219 yards and two TDs. No.5 Purdue kicker Paul Griggs: The junior be- came the first kicker in Purdue history to have two 50-plus-yard field goals in a game, drilling a 52- and 53-yarder with the wind at his back. He also had an equally im- pressive 40-yarder into the wind. *Subject to credit approval. No annual fee. Balance transfers and cash advances not eligible for rewards points.
