GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 11 • 29 BY GOLD AND BLACK STAFF P urdue got out of its second and final bye week what it'd hoped: The resting of key injured players should get them back on the field Saturday against Northwestern. The Boilermakers were without starters Frankie Williams (concussion) and Ra'Zahn Howard (foot) against Wisconsin and then lost another starter, Ryan Russell, in the first half with a hip injury. But those players are expected to play against the Wildcats on senior day, and they should provide a signif - icant boost to the defense. Purdue struggled to defend the rush and the pass against the Badgers, and Howard is a big-bodied space-filler on the inside of the line. Williams has been an active defender in the back half in his junior season. "Those two guys can make plays for us," Coach Darrell Hazell said. "You talk about a guy (Howard) inside up front that's hard to block because of his quickness, not his power or his size, but his quickness. That'll give them some problems inside. Then Frankie has been a playmaker for us all year when he's been healthy. So those two guys are impact players for us." Players can qualify for the list, which was originated from Hazell's decree of "A Players Must Get A's" by getting a 3.0 average or better for the semester. The Boilermakers had 40 players make the list in the fall. The team posted a 2.78 GPA for the spring, up from a 2.65 in the fall, and improved its cumulative GPA to 2.77, up from 2.75 prior to the spring semester. It is the highest team GPA for football in at least 20 years.
