GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 11 • 36 nis is being afforded due process after encountering legal prob- lems and wide receiver Tyshawn Brown is still awaiting academic approval that would green-light his commitment — but Faison puts Purdue in the vicinity of 16 commitments for what should be a class of 25-plus signees. PURDUE RECRUIT BREAKS RECORD Running back recruit Markell Jones ran for nearly 300 yards and six touchdowns in the first half alone in his Columbus East team's 42-14 playoff win over Evansville Reitz last weekend. In so doing, he became the state's single-season rushing yardage record-holder, bringing his total to 3,379 and topping the previous mark of 3,366 held by Cory Jac- quay, who set the mark for New Haven in 2001. IU COMMITMENT VISITING Noblesville offensive line- man Brandon Knight — an early Purdue target with numerous family ties to the school and West Lafayette — will unofficially visit for this weekend's Northwestern game despite having committed to Indiana in the summer. Purdue is hoping to change Knight's mind as well as that of Westfield defensive lineman Ja- cob Robinson, also an Indiana commit since the summer. Robinson unofficially vis- ited Purdue for its game against Wisconsin. COMMITMENT TRACKER R Quarterback Elijah Sin- delar: Caldwell County (Ky.) beat Caldwell Memorial 44-6 with the QB completing 12-of-16 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. R Running back Tario Fuller: Lanier High School (Ga.) fell on a last-second field goal, 24-21 to Se- quoyah, ending its season. Fuller ran for 69 yards on 17 carries and caught two passes for 39 yards. R Linebacker Sawyer Daw- son: Plant City High School lost to Sickles High School 9-7. Dawson made five tackles and recovered a fumble. R Safety Andy Chelf: Southlake (Texas) Carroll came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Mansfield 38-31, with the safety making approximately 14 tackles with a couple breakups R Cornerback Isaac Warren: John Tyler High School beat Tex - arkana 58-23. Warren made four tackles and blocked a punt for a touchdown. R Defensive end Twazanga Mugala: Charlotte's Ardrey Kell beat Page High School 28-16, with Mugala making seven tackles, in- cluding three for loss, a sack and a breakup. MEN'S BASKETBALL SIGNS TWO In guards Ryan Cline and Grant Weatherford, Purdue signed two very different players last week. Cline, of Carmel (Ind.) High School, is the epitome of skill, one of the finest perimeter shooters in his class nationally. "Ryan Cline's really improved as a player and gives us a re- ally good shooter, a guy who can stretch the defense," Coach Matt Painter said. "We feel like the last couple years we haven't had enough skill on our team with the ability to shoot the basketball and decision-makers. We feel like we've made a big improvement in that area. The past three years we feel like we've signed the best pe- rimeter shooter in the Midwest in Kendall Stephens, Dakota Mathias and now Ryan Cline." Painter expects Cline to be college-ready when he arrives next summer. "I think last year having to play point guard (at Carmel) is really going to help him down the road," Painter said. "He's always played in structure at Carmel High School and that's going to help him in the Big Ten. "There's a lot of guys out there with a lot of gifts but they come to college having never played in structure and it really hurts them. I think the style they have played and the winning basketball they've played, it's really going to help him. He has good size, he can pass the basketball, he can handle the ball and he can definitely stretch a de - fense to 25 feet. "Very few guys can say the had a chance to shoot 50 percent from three in a season whether in high school or college. I think he is one of those guys." Purdue running back recruit Markell Jones now holds Indiana's single-season rushing record.
