GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 11 • 44 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com P urdue stumbled in its home open- er Wednesday night, losing in double overtime to Green Bay. It's a game the Boilermak- ers could have — and probably should have — won, leading by eight with four minutes left and then having a free throw that would have put them up a one with three seconds first in the first overtime. But April Wilson missed, and Purdue lost in double OT. The Boilermakers are 1-1 now, fol- lowing their season-opening win at Ball State on Friday. Following are impressions of the week: S Senior forward Whitney Bays is going to see a bulk of the attention from defenses, at least until Purdue proves that it can consistently beat them from the outside. But that's yet to happen. And Bays is getting beat up because of it; the Phoe- nix collapsed on her at every opportu- nity, forcing her into a 6-of-20 shooting night. She made only four of her 10 field goal attempts against Ball State. The Boilermak- ers have hit 13 three- pointers in two games this season, but seven have come from one player, Ashley Morrissette. To open up the inside, where Bays and Liza Clemons could control many oppo- nents, Purdue needs better balance, making it imperative that Morrissette continue to play well, while others step up. S Morrissette's been solid, showing off her scoring ability through the first two games. The sophomore is averaging a Purdue-best 19.5 points per game, but it's not very efficient, as she's shooting only 37 percent from the floor. But Purdue needs production, as it looks for replacements to the scoring acumen of Courtney Moses and KK Houser, and Mor- rissette can provide. S Purdue has very limited depth. Five players are averaging at least 32.5 minutes per game (although one of the two Purdue games thus far went to double overtime). But more notably, the bench has made little impact in terms of points or rebounds. Andreona Keys scored 12 off the bench vs. Ball State, but then the freshman was held without a point against Green Bay. The Phoenix outscored Purdue's bench 32- 7. j W O M E N ' S B A S K E T B A L L G O L D B O X E S L I N K T O G A M E S T O R I E S Bob Strempka Ashley Morrissette has averaged 19.5 points in Purdue's first two games, with eight assists and eight rebounds as well. A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST WEEK OF BASKETBALL FLASH FORWARD Opponent: Toledo Location: West Lafayette (Mackey Arena) When: 2 p.m. Sunday Notables: Toledo is 0-1 after losing its opener at Cleveland State on Friday. The Rockets' second game is Thursday night, as it hosts St. Bonaventure. Sophomores Janice Monakana and Sophie Reecher each led the Rockets with 14 in the season-opening loss. … Former Boilermaker Tricia Cullop is in her seventh year as the head coach at Toledo, having a 265-170 overall record. The Rockets were 16-16 last season, after four years with at least 24 victories. … Purdue is 7-0 in the series, having beaten Toledo there 81-79 last season.
