Click the Background swatch in the Tools panel (the white one) to display the Color Picker. Set the brightness to 20 percent then click O K . Choose the Gradient tool. Drag diagonally from the lower right to the upper left corner to deposit a foreground to background gradient. Select All (Cmnd/Cntrl + A), then go to Edit > Define Pattern. Name the pat- tern Metallic Background (see Figure 2). You will use this pattern to fill the background of the metallic text docu- ment. You can close the document with- out saving it. Step 2: Create an Action To record the steps for creating the metallic text effect, open the Actions panel (Window > Actions). Go to the Panel Options menu (on the upper right of the Actions panel). Choose New Set. (A "set" is a folder where actions are stored). Name the set Metallic Type. Choose New Action from the Panel Options menu. In the dialog box, name the action Metallic. Click the Record but- ton and take a deep breath, and be careful. Anything you do from this point on will be recorded as the red record button on the Actions panel indicates (see Figure 3). Step 3. Create a New Document In the dialog box choose File > New to create a new document that is 640 wide by 480 high by 72 pixels per inch, RGB with a transparent background (see Figure 4). Any size or resolution will work but will require higher specifica- tion values for higher resolution images. Name the document MetalHead. Press your D key to set the default foreground and background colors to black and white. Press the X key to switch foreground and background col- ors. Target the bottom most layer (Layer 1). Press Opt/Alt + Delete/Backspace to fill the layer with white. Apply the Background Pattern To apply the pattern you made to the new document go to the Layer Menu > New Fill Layer > Pattern. Choose the Metallic Background pattern from the list, scale it to 30 percent and click OK (as in Figure 5a). The Actions panel now con- tains the Make Fill Layer command in the list of actions, and the background looks like Figure 5b. Step 4. Add and Align Type Click the image with the Horizontal Type tool. Type the words METALHEAD (or any words of your choice) in white.
