PURDUE (3-8, 1-6)
The Boilermakers hold the
edge in the all-time series
against Northwestern, 50-28-1, but their lead
shrunk by one on Saturday … Purdue turned
the ball over five times, resulting in a 38-14
loss … Quarterback Austin Appleby threw the
ball 48 times, connecting on 26 attempts for
251 yards and two scores, but also threw two
picks … The defeat extends Purdue's losing
streak to five. The Boilermakers have not won
since beating Illinois 38-27 in the first week of
October.
RUTGERS (6-5, 2-5)
Rutgers will limp back to Pis-
cataway after a 45-3 beatdown
at the hands of Michigan State … Quarter-
back Gary Nova threw two interceptions and
was 11-of-26 passing for just 108 yards … The
Scarlet Knights were down 35-0 at the half and
didn't score until there were just 49-seconds
left in the third quarter, making a 44-yard field
goal … The Rutgers defense surrendered 520
yards of offense to the Spartans, while the
offense could manage only 234 of their own.
WISCONSIN (9-2, 6-1)
On the legs of running back
Melvin Gordon, the Wisconsin
Badgers held on to beat Iowa, 26-
24, in Iowa City Saturday … The quarterback
duo of Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy com-
bined for one touchdown, 139 yards through
the air and another 62 on the ground in a day
that belonged to Gordon … The junior run-
ning back rushed for exactly 200 yards and two
more touchdowns to bring his season totals to
2,109 yards and 26 scores … Gordon scored
one of his touchdowns on a career-long 88-
yard scamper en route to his record-setting day
… Gordon reached 2,000 yards on 241 carries,
the fewest any FBS player has needed to reach
that mark in a single year. ❏
