GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 12 • 24 BY GOLD AND BLACK STAFF F reshman Gregory Phillips got his first career start against Northwestern and had the most productive game in his first season. Phillips caught four passes for 69 yards. In his first 10 games, he had five catches for 71 yards. It helped that Phillips was able to get more snaps. Against the Wildcats, playing in place of the team's other main X receiver DeAn- gelo Yancey, Phillips unof- ficially got a career-high 58 plays. He was targeted six times by quarterback Austin Appleby. "Greg played pretty con- sistently, made some strong catches," Coach Darrell Hazell said. Phillips is expected to get another start against In- diana this weekend, and he'll need to continue to make strides with the increased playing time. Hazell said he thinks Purdue's running game has suffered a bit the last couple weeks because the outside receivers haven't shown they can make a big enough impact, especially against man coverage. That's led defenses to start stacking the box against the Boilermakers. Phillips is joined on the outside by another true freshman, Trae Hart. "He's developing," Appleby said of Phillips. "I'm re- ally, really proud of him, and I'm proud of Trae Hart for Phillips Growing With Experience F O OT BA L L : N E W S A N D N OT E S PRESENTS www.MeetYouAtArnis.com LAFAYETTE • INDIANAPOLIS • GREENWOOD Visit one of our 18 Indiana locations Meet You At Arni's TM Celebrates Purdue's Student-Athletes SERVING BOILER FANS FOR 50 YEARS World Famous Pizza, Salads, Sandwiches Bilal Marshall Sophomore, Major in Organizational Leadership and Supervision Marshall, a wide receiver from Miami Fla., was one of 47 players on the Boilermaker football team to make coach Darrell Hazell's "A-Players" list for the spring. The Boilermakers had 40 players make the list in the fall. The team posted a 2.78 GPA for the spring, up from a 2.65 in the fall, and improved its cumulative GPA to 2.77, up from 2.75 prior to the spring semester. It is the highest team GPA for football in at least 20 years. Tom Campbell Gregory Phillips is gaining invaluable snaps these last couple weeks of his first season at receiver for Purdue. He's expected to make his second consecutive start against Indiana.
