34 Issue 69 / 2014 FESTIVALS guestlist.net JUNKANOO FESTIVAL The Bahamas throws a huge cultural extravaganza Every Boxing day The Bahamas throws a huge cultural extravaganza known as Junkanoo, one of the most elaborate and vibrant festivals in the world. The parade derives from slavery in the 16th and 17th century. Legend has it slaves were given three days off at Christmas in which they paraded the streets of Nassau in colourful masks, travelling from house to house, often on stilts, spreading positive vibes and expressing their sense of freedom. Similar to London's Notting Hill or Rio's Carnival, Junkanoo is awash with extravagant outfits woven in beautiful bright threads, paraded in the midst of traditional Bahamian music and dance. The imagination that goes into the outfits is an ode to the hard graft and imagination of the designers and seamstress' who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Creativity at the heart, the cloths have always been a feat of innovation and inspiration; traditional outfits were even made out of sponges from the bottom of the ocean. Music performed on a variety of goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles and horns keeps the party going late into the early morning hours, where the shuffle dance routines dazzle the crowds and maintain the high spirits. WINTER PLISSKËN FESTIVAL PITCHFORK PARIS MUSIC FESTIVAL OUTBREAK FESTIVAL IN COVENTRY On the 4th- 5th December, Winter Plisskën Festival is here to blow your minds (and ears). Paris Pitchfork Party. Coventry hosts an unusual weekend to remember. Pack your bags; we're off to Greece to dance with techno finest. Ever wanted to take a winter trip to Athens or Thessaloniki and soak up a bit of culture and some seriously heavy beats? With the likes of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Swans, Simian Mobile Disco, The Bug and Son Luz and pre sale prices starting from 25 Euros. You don't want to end your year with a bang, you want to end it with a beat, a Plisskën beat to be precise! If somebody told me several months ago that I would be spending this Halloween in a former slaughterhouse called 'The Great Hall Of Cattle' in the former abattoir district of Paris, I would become hysterical, lock myself in the bathroom and never leave. However, upon seeing the line-up I would gladly go through any horrors imaginable just to get there. The highlight of the festival was undoubtedly Belle and Sebastian. Though their music isn't the most danceable, they know exactly how to get a crowd going. It was a really strong second outing for the festival. Jusqu'à l'année prochaine Pitchfork Paris! d. Over the Halloween weekend Outbreak injected some underground cool into Coventry and offered rave kids something to get stuck into without having to travel around the country. Friday offered a largely drum & bass heavy line- up, from acts like Sigma, Ms Dynamite and the legendary David Rodigan. Day two took more of an underground house and techno route, with Patrick Topping doing his thing to an increasingly busy floor. Coventry has never seen an orgasm of dance as big as this before, we predict you will see more of it in the future.
