Water Balance Water Balance is as important for water in a spa or hot tub as it is for swimming pool water. What is water balance? It is a combination of pH, Total Alkalinity and Water Hardness. pH is measured on a scale of 1 to 14. Seven is neutral. Below 7 is acidic or corrosive and above 7 is alkaline. The pH also effects the killing power of the sanitiser. Incorrect pH levels can cause skin and eye irritations, poor sanitiser efficiency, cloudy water, scale formation on walls and fittings and corrosion of equipment. The recommended level for pH in a spa or hot tub is 7.4 – 7.6ppm (parts per million). 4
