AHEAD OF THE GAME 19 the Groundsman December 2014 Visit www.iog.org for more information and digital editions Sustainable Use Directive (SUD) update seminar This was Rigby Taylor's third such seminar this year, following similar successful events at Ibrox and Old Trafford. And, it must be said, the day at Wembley was interesting and informative rather than an overt sales platform for Rigby Taylor's products. In addition to a series of informative presentations by a range of industry experts – the implications of SUD in terms of groundscare (by Steve Gingell, STRI), spraying efficacy and efficiency (consultant Peter Corbett) and the essential role of nutrition in turf care (Rigby Taylor's Andrew McMahon) – as part of the stadium tour, the delegates also received details of 'sprayer health checks' from Gambetti's James Dixon. www.rigbytaylor.com The four-strong team (which is supplemented on match days by 10 additional staff for post-game clean- up/event turnaround) highlighted how 'mini renovations' take place when there is a clear window of three-four weeks. For example, to ensure the base of the sward is clean and that the Desso surface is clear of thatch and stays more disease-tolerant, one trick is to use brushes on the front of the John Deere post-game clean-up mowers to 'flick up' any debris to be collected by the mower. Another has been the mixing of already-used 12.0.12 fertiliser with Rigby Taylor's Activ8 granules, to enhance root strength. The Wembley team is clearly a victim of its own success since there is no sign of abatement in the heavy fixture list, meaning that the team will continue to be moving the goalposts – for the different sports and in terms of their groundscare routines and expertise. "That's why we're forever pressurising our suppliers to continually develop technologies to help us achieve these aims," Tony added. l More than 160 grounds professionals attended the SUD seminar at Wembley We're forever pressurising our suppliers to continually develop technologies to help us achieve these aims " "
