GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 14 • 12 But Griggs never gave coaches the chance. After making only half of his 12 field goals as a sophomore in 2013, Griggs was near-perfect in 2014. He made 16-of-20 kicks, including all three he attempted from at least 50 yards. He was the first kicker in Purdue's history to have three 50-plus-yarders in a season. "Competition breeds excel - lence. This coaching staff believes that. I believe that. It's something you definitely need, you need that reminder, whether it's there physi- cally or not that there's another guy who is willing and able to step up and take your place Saturday," Griggs said of the arrival of Ian MacDougall. "He definitely made me a lot better. From a confidence standpoint, the thing about kick- ing is there's a lot of stats involved, but really at the end of the day, what matters is do you make kicks or not? I knew if I did my job and took care of what I could control then I would let everything go and the coaches could make the deci- sions on who they think are the best players to play on Saturday." OTHER WINNERS Captains Justin Sinz and Rob- ert Kugler both were took home two awards from the banquet. Sinz was the Guy "Red" Mackey Award winner, presented to the player who exemplifies over suc- cess, and "A" Player Award for the player that shows success in the classroom, field and community. Kugler's 3.97 GPA over the last two semesters earned him the Noble E. Kizer Award, and he also took home the Kiwanis Citizenship Award for his community service work. Collin Link was the Leonard Wilson Award winner for the player best exemplifying unselfishness; Hunt got the Pop "Doan" Award for the most impactful performance against Indiana; and David Blough and Ryan DeBusk were scout teams players of the year, earning the Verle H. Campbell Award. ANOTHER GAME Senior defensive end Ryan Russell has accepted an invite to play in the East-West Shrine game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game, which starts at 4 p.m. on Jan. 17, will be broadcast on the NFL Network. In his final season, Russell had a career-high 44 tackles. He also had 6.5 tackles for loss, including three sacks.
