officially was inducted into the College
Football Hall of Fame this week.
"It's definitely an honor to be here,"
Butz told Bonnie Bernstein at the cer-
emony in New York on Tuesday. "I'll live
forever. That's how important making
this team is. When I was told that I made
the team, I think I stopped breathing for
a while. What an honor."
Bernstein asked Butz why ultimate
-
ly he chose football over basketball —
a spor t he was "great " at, she said.
" There were too many elbows
above the rim, that was quick to see,"
he said. "In junior high, I could back-
hand stuff a ball. I never lost a tip ball
in high school, scored 1,500 points and
missed about 500 from the free -throw
line.
"It 's a lot easier to acquire another
human being than play with a round
ball."
As a senior for the Boilermakers,
Butz was an All-American and was a fi-
nalist for the Lombardi Award.
During his career, he had 108 tack-
les, including 21 for a loss. He was the
fifth overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft
and played 16 seasons in the league.

Apparently, Purdue is losing at least
one underclassman.
Receiver Cedric Dale posted on
his Twitter, "Last few days up here at
Purdue … ima miss my teammates the
most."
Dale came to Purdue as a defen-
sive back but moved to receiver during
the season, at his request. He was bur-
ied on the depth char t there and likely
would have stayed there, considering
the makeup of the roster at that posi-
tion with a bunch of returning experi-
enced receivers.
