Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at
memorable covers while reflecting what was going on at the time.
Every Boilermaker fan is eager to see this again: A cover pre
viewing a bowl appearance, like this one from Dec. 21, 2002.
It stands out as one of my favorites just because I like the color in it. Purdue's
gold uniform was never a huge favorite, but it looked good here on John Standeford.
Fans might remember that Washington's Reggie Williams (pictured) tried to show
up Standeford and the Boilermakers at the Sun Bowl game-week banquet by flexing at
the podium. And when UW pulled to a 17-0 early lead a couple of days later in the game,
Williams appeared to have justification for his actions. But in the end, the Boilermakers
were the ones doing the talking in the 34-24 win on Dec. 31, 2002 in El Paso, Texas.
While the teams and score were identical from the Rose Bowl game played two
years earlier, the victory over the Huskies on New Year's Eve helped provide a small mea-
sure of revenge and give the Boilermakers a lot of momentum heading into the 2003 season.
