Akeem Hunt lost his starting running back spot in the spring to Raheem Mostert. Paul Griggs watched as coaches brought in a fifth-year transfer to compete for his field-goal kick- ing job, obviously looking to replace the incumbent. And Landon Feichter was benched during the middle of the season — after a string of five consecutive double-digit tackling games. Each player, though, resound- ingly responded. And produced MVP seasons. "It's a team vote, so we let the masses make the decision. I think they voted well," Coach Darrell Hazell said Sunday after the post- season banquet that revealed the winners. "I thought those guys re- ally played well down the stretch, all three of those guys, Akeem, Landon and Griggs. So I was pleased with the voting." Once Mostert was benched af- ter the season's fourth game and Hunt moved back into the starting role, Hunt thrived. In those final sev- en games, Hunt rushed for 770 yards and a whopping 5.4 yards per carry. He finished the season just short of the first 1,000-yard effort of his career — at any level — and that had him "bummed out," but he also made sure it didn't sour the overall individual season. The Boilermakers had 40 players make the list in the fall. The team posted a 2.78 GPA for the spring, up from a 2.65 in the fall, and improved its cumulative GPA to 2.77, up from 2.75 prior to the spring semester.
