T he holiday season has a special meaning this year for Michigan hockey staff, players and fans. The Great Lakes Invitational Tour- nament (GLI), annually held over the Christmas and New Year 's holiday break, is celebrating its 50th anni- versary this season. Michigan will be making its 44th appearance at the tournament, to be held at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit Dec. 28-29. The 2014 edition of the holiday get-together will feature four teams from the state of Michigan for only   MICHIGAN HOCKEY Wolverines Prepare For Great Lakes Invitational Tournament HOCKEY REWIND: NOV. 16-DEC. 5 Overall Record: 8-6-0 Big Ten Record: 2-1-0 Best Win — Dec. 5: Michigan 8, Ohio State 3 (at Yost Arena): Four second- period power-play goals and solid penalty killing boosted Michigan to an 8-3 win over the Buckeyes. Sophomore forward Alex Kile and junior forward An- drew Copp each had a pair of power-play goals in the middle stanza. Worst Loss — Nov. 21: Penn State 3, Michigan 2 (at Yost Arena): The only loss in this schedule segment, Michigan outplayed Penn State for 57 of the game's 60 minutes, but Penn State scored three quick goals in a three-minute stretch in the second period and held off 40 Michigan shots. MVP — Goaltender Zach Nagelvoort: After the tough loss to Penn State, the sophomore finally showed the form Michigan head coach Red Berenson had been seeking, highlighted by a shared shutout with Luke Dwyer over RPI. Nagelvoort earned Big Ten First Star of the Week honors for his two weekend wins over RPI, part of a four-game winning streak for the sopho- more netminder. On The Rise — Boo Nieves: Adapting to a move from center to right wing, the junior dazzled with a pair of highlight-reel goals, the first against Penn State at a crucial point in a Michigan win and the second as part of a two-goal performance against RPI. Top Freshman — Dylan Larkin: Although he's only found the back of the net twice in Michigan's 14 games, Larkin has chipped in a team-leading 13 assists and has displayed a game-changing relentless drive. Game to Watch — Dec. 28: Great Lakes Invitational Tournament vs. Michi- gan Tech: The Wolverines will have an opportunity to avenge early-season road losses to Michigan Tech in the opening game of the 50th annual edition of the holiday tournament at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
