MICHIGAN FOOTBALL the Wolverines this season with 62 catches for 733 yards. He finished his Michigan career with at least one reception in 25 straight games. After those two, a number of Wol- verines did receive honorable men- tion. Senior defensive end Brennen Beyer, fifth-year senior punter Will Hagerup and redshirt junior corner- back Raymon Taylor earned honor- able mention from the coaches. The media bestowed honorable mention on Beyer, Funchess, Taylor and red- shirt junior cornerback Blake Count- ess. MICHIGAN LOSES DON DUFEK SR. One of Michigan's greats almost never made it to Ann Arbor. When Don Dufek Sr. started as a college freshman, he was — like most Chi- cago school kids during his era — a Notre Dame guy first. He was ac- tually at the school for a few days before returning home as a homesick young man, and then enrolling at Michigan. And that's how the Dufek lin- eage started at U-M. Years later in the 1970s, two sons — Bill, an All- Big Ten offensive tackle, and Don Jr., a hockey and football standout who earned All-America honors at U-M before enjoying a lengthy NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks — followed their father 's lead, up- holding the legacy he'd started as an outstanding two-way player from 1948-50. The Michigan football family lost Dufek Sr. Dec. 10. "He's not only in the Michigan Hall of Honor, but life's Hall of Honor," former Michigan player and family friend John Ghindia said. "He was a great person who made a difference and will be missed and remembered by all." From the time Dufek arrived to when he left in 1951, he and his teammates always ended the season a champion. The 1947 and '48 teams were among the best of their era, each winning a national title, with Dufek was Team MVP for the 1950 Wolver- ines, capping his career with a Big Ten title and a win in the Rose Bowl.
