14 Issue 70 / 2014 HOUSE/ TECHNO guestlist.net The best in House happening in 2014 January: The debut Australian new years day-festival-rave Let Them Eat Cake kicks off 2014 with a boom. Bringing together an array of genres, highlights include sets at the RA tent which hosted DJs such as DJ Koze, James Holden and Julio Bashmore to name a few. Mexico's BPM festival soon followed from 3rd-12th January with a gigantic hous line up including Green Velvet, Visionquest, Dixon and DJ Harvey. Who said January is depressing? February: Roland release AIRA series including their only update of the seminal TR808 machine, the TR-8. Kassem Mosse releases debut album for Workshop 19. March/ April: House music tragically loses two pioneers. House music pioneer Frankie Knuckles sadly passes away 31st March at age 59 due to 'complications relating to Type II diabetes'. DJ Rashad, associated with the footwork genre and Hyperdub Music, sadly follows Knuckles being found dead 26th April in an apartment in Chicago. May: 2014 sees tensions running high between the EDM and underground music scenes. The brilliantly outspoken Seth Troxler in an article for Thump, Vice in May, unleashes a brilliantly provocative but insightful rant on EDM. One of his finest moments in the article is claiming 'EDM is not a culture, because it gives nothing back.' Laidback Luke later respondes accordingly. June: The test pressing of Aphex Twin's long lost Caustic Window LP is sold on ebay for $46,300 USD as part of a Kickstarter campaign to equally distribute the record. Sónar took place across the perfect city for a music festival, Barcelona establishing itself as one of the most exciting house music festivals with Chic, Massive Attack and James Murphy. July: Roman Flügel releases critically acclaimed album Happiness is Happening on Dial Records. The all-age Lovebox Festival successfully hosts the likes of Theo Parrish, Benji B and Paul Woolford and Moderat in Victoria Park, London. August: The beautiful hills of the West Yorkshire dales hosted Beacons festival quickly establishing itself as one of the most exciting and relevant festivals in electronic music presenting the likes of Daniel Avery, Jon Hopkins and DARKSIDE. August is always a packed month for festival house music with established festivals such as Croatia's Dimensions and US's Burning Man showcasing the finest acts house music has to offer. September: Steve Aoki threatens to sue electronic music satire sensation Wunderground, whilst Aphex Twin releases Syro album. October: Objekt releases seminal album Flatland whilst Apollonia, the Parasian underground house music supergroup made up of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky release debut album Tour á Tour. November: Nina Kraviz launches new label with full details on the debut record featuring herself, Steve Stoll, Population One, Bjarki, Exos and Parrish Smith. Aphex Twin gives away free modular samples on SoundCloud. December: Richie Hawtin knocks over female iPhone photo-taker with a heavy monitor whilst Floating Points announces launch of reissue label while. NEWS LOEFAH TO RETIRE FROM DJING FROM 01/01/2015 In May, Loefah opened up to FACT about hanging up his headphones after 20 years of producing music. This will mark the end of his two decade career, from representing early drum n bass and break beat to his own hybrid brand of dubstep which caught the imagination of a generation of music fans. Bias will still be busy with new projects such as a new Swamp81 album, the 12-month, fully accredited Zed Bias Scholarship course at the Manchester MIDI School and the possibility of starting a live act. Make sure not to miss both his last DJ sets on New Years Eve in Lakota, Bristol with Swamp81 and at the Laundry, London.
