40 REGGAE / DANCE HALL guestlist.net Issue70 / 2014 NEWS THE RETURN OF GENTLEMAN Gentleman is back with his newest album OUR PLAYLIST No Coke (Slow Mix) DJ Ciaco, DJ Memory, Fonza Ciaco Budda Bye 2014 (vocal mix) Johnny Osbourne, 6Blocc Slings & Arrows Fat Freddy's Drop Play ft. Jazzmin and Ragga Twins Liquid Stranger Here's the Reggae on our playlist this month: When we say Reggae star, we know that the words white and German do not come to mind, but Gentleman has made it work to his advantage. German-born Tilmann Otto aka Gentleman has proved that he is more than a gimmick with his decade long career. He returns with Gentleman MTV Unplugged, which boasts an impressive array of hits featuring some of the biggest reggae stars on the scene. The album in its entirety was recorded live with a host of musicians, including an 8 piece string section which Gentleman feel gives the album "great spirit". A lucky audience was treated to the roster of songs at an exclusive venue in his hometown of Cologne,Germany. A stripped back, slowed down display of musicality, the album is politically charged and on the pulse of current issues in many ways. Highlights include a goosebump inducing version of the much covered Redemption Song in which Ky-Mani Marley sounds eerily like his father. Gentleman brought in composers who he affectionately nicknamed the String Ninjas to rework the songs, bringing the 8 piece string section to the forefront. Gentleman goes on tour early 2015, with UK dates yet to be announced. The lead singer Ezra Gale has said that they stayed respectful to the much loved melodies of the festive tunes, which maintain their shine within a new rootsy arrangement. Have a very dubby Christmas! Super Hi-Fi, the five-piece reggae band from Brooklyn release a compilation of classic Christmas anthems with a reggae twist!
