Services include surgery, dentistry, lameness evaluation & rehabilitation, reproduction, internal medicine, preventive care, diagnostic imaging and 24-hour emergency and intermediate care. Austin Equine Hospital was founded in 2004 by Damon O'Gan, who saw a need for high quality equine veterinary medicine in the Southwest Austin area. The practice was 100% ambulatory from 2004 to 2008. Dr. Matt Evans joined the practice as a partner in 2005. In 2008 they built a hospital facility and Dr. JoLynn Joyce, ACVS, joined the team. The hospital has a surgery suite, two induction and recovery stalls, two ICU stalls, two exam rooms and a six stall barn. As you can see from the pictures, it's pretty sweet. As leaders and collaborators in equine healthcare, Austin Equine Hospital strives to provide professional, compassionate and ethical care. Our facility is specifically designed to accommodate all manners of equine veterinary and surgical services. Our facility comprises four main units: Examination, Intermediate Care, Intensive Care and the Surgical Facility. Two examination rooms are fully equipped with diagnostic and emergency care tools at all times to ensure prompt and comprehensive care. Advanced diagnostics include: two digital radiography machines, digital ultrasonography, 1-meter and 3-meter endoscopy/gastroscopy, shockwave, and colic kits. The Intermediate Care barn comprises a shaded structure of 6 open-air, floor-padded stalls. An automatic fly- control spray system and individual stall fans ensure comfort for boarding horses during all seasons. Due to the temperate weather of Driftwood, heaters may be used in rare cases of extreme cold. The Intensive Care Unit comprises 2 floor-padded stalls with 24- hour video surveillance. Our ICU protocol enforces strict control of infectious diseases and intimate care for our critically ill patients. The foundation of our diagnoses and treatments relies on sound, safe, and evidence-based principles of equine medicine. Damon, Matt and JoLynn were all classmates at Texas A&M and are not only still on speaking terms, but are all good friends and happy to be working together. Dr. Damon O'Gan comes from the Big Horn Mountain country of northern Wyoming. He received his DVM from Texas A&M in 2003. Dr. O'Gan started Austin Equine in 2004. His areas of special interest include lameness, acupuncture, and the equine foot. Dr. O'Gan lives in central Austin with his wife, and when away from the hospital he enjoys playing music, vintage motorcycles, building musical instruments and leatherwork. Dr. Matt Evans is a native Austinite with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine From Texas A&M University. Dr. Evans became a partner at Austin Equine in 2005 and his veterinary interests include equine dentistry, sporthorse medicine and equine reproduction. Dr. Evans and his wife have two children, both girls, and the three of them together keep him happy and humble. In his free time he enjoys gardening, reading, oil painting and planning his next London pub-crawl. Dr. JoLynn Joyce is a native of Huntsville, Texas. She attended Texas A&M University where she earned both her Bachelor and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees. Following veterinary school, Dr. Joyce completed an equine internship at Waller Equine Hospital and then went on to Colorado State University to complete a surgical residency. She became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2009. She was happy to return to the great state of Texas and make Austin Equine her home. Her areas of interest include lameness and surgery. She and her husband live in the area and enjoy live music, outdoors and spending time with family. Dr. Rachel Wilson is a native of Dripping Springs, Texas. She attended Texas A&M for her undergraduate studies in Biomedical Science and obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in the Spring of 2010. She has particular interests in lameness, internal medicine and surgery. Dr. Wilson joined Austin Equine as our first veterinary intern. She is member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Wilson is thrilled to be living in the Austin area. Away from work, she is an avid rider and owns Malcolm, a twenty-one year old Thoroughbred. Now Austin Equine is a four doctor/one intern primary care and referral clinic and Damon and Matt are as surprised by that as I'm sure most of you are. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Austin Equine Hospital. Austin Equine Hospital has been a TEVA Platinum Practice since 2012.
