GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 15 • 18 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com I n the final minutes of Purdue's win over Indiana Sunday, Coach Sha- ron Versyp was shouting very spe- cific instructions from the sideline. The command was directed at senior forward Whitney Bays, who had already contributed 27 points and nine rebounds toward what would be an 86-64 victory. "I hear Coach saying 'Get one more rebound,' and I was like 'What?'" Bays said afterward. "I was just hustling, but really tired, thought 'I just have to get this re- bound for coach.' " The rebound, which she col- lected before subbing out, gave the captain her fifth straight dou- ble-double, setting a Purdue re- cord. She broke the mark previous- ly held by Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton and Stacey Lovelace. After learning she had set a new Boiler- makers' mark, Bays was nearly overcome with emotion. It was, after all, only a few years ago that her basketball ca- reer was in doubt, hav- ing played only one semi-healthy season in a four-year span, while battling a seemingly never-ending string of knee injuries. But her transfer to Purdue gave her new life, and she's taken advantage. "Coming here to Purdue, I didn't know how I was going to be," said Bays, fighting back tears as she spoke. "Just having my team - mates and the best support staff ever, it's given me confidence, made me work harder, it's changed me as a person. "My teammates are great. I feed off of them. I try to work on my game, bring everything. I didn't even know I had done that (record)." Bays set the mark with her best game of the season and perhaps of her two-year Purdue career; her career-high 27 points came on 11-of-16 shooting, with the 10 rebounds, three assists and a steal. It was a dominant, All-Amer - ican-type performance. "They could not stop Whit- ney Bays," teammate Bridget Perry said. Bays has been nearly un- stoppable during the five-game streak, averaging 16.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game, while shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor. "She takes a lot of pride," Ver- syp said. "When she came here, people had been telling her she wasn't good enough. And we told her she was so good. … She's had to work and get Tom Campbell Whitney Bays moved past assistant coach Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton (pictured here), along with former Boilermaker Stacey Lovelace, to become the only player in school history with five straight double-doubles. 2014-15 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Date Opponent Time/Result Nov. 9 FINDLAY (exb.)
