GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 16 • 13 players a general understanding of position defense or, in Haas' case, post- ing up on the block. It's been an odd balance for Haas and Painter, who admits he's learned a lot this season working with a player so big, not just in height but in physical size. And Painter thinks it's been a challenge for offi - cials, too. "What they're calling on him are good calls," Painter stressed last week. "That's not my issue. Our concern is … the things that are being left alone on the other end when he's trying to post. They're either kneeing him out or putting two hands on him. Those are the ones that hopefully he doesn't get frustrated through. "He's big. He's got to learn to adjust. When he swings and does that, those are absolutes. But when he just makes a normal basketball move and he turns and he tries to post up and he's up in - stead of out and he just connects with somebody? Boy, that's hard. He's get- ting penalized for his size. The rule is the rule, but he still has to adjust. We have to continue to educate and watch film and we have to make those adjustments." Haas contends he's going to try to continue to play his game and not let the officiating take him out of his style. He's noticed some officials trying to adjust to him, and even said Ted Val - entine told Vander- bilt's Damian Jones, "You're just going to have to figure out a way to guard that." But Haas hasn't been as fortu- nate of late. "I have to be able to not el- bow people. I have to be aware of that," Haas said before the Mary- land game. "I can clear out space and as long as I do it legally … I might elbow a guy every now and then but it's an accident. It's never going to be intentional. I'm just trying to play fair basketball. I just have to be more aware and stop trying to get in a wrestling match with everybody. It's some- thing I really have to work on to play smarter and be able to stay in the game more." SCOTT WAITING Since getting "sent out" of practice on Jan. 2, sophomore Bryson Scott went without a min- ute against Michigan and Wiscon- sin and played only 14 seconds against Maryland Saturday. Scott is desperate to work back into time on the court, but he likely will need to change some things to do so. Scott admitted he doesn't al- ways follow defensive scouting reports but said he's confused on exactly what Painter wants, won- dering how he can be aggressive like he's asked but also stick to the team's principles. "I just have to continue to fight," Scott said. "I think what both- ers him the most is sometimes I don't follow the game plan to the T. I need to do a better job of that. That will keep me on the court. "I just have to be a little more Tom Campbell Bryson Scott has played his way out of Matt Painter's rotation in the last 10 days, but the sophomore insists he's going to keep fighting to get back onto the court BIG TEN STANDINGS (Through Jan. 12) Team Big Ten/Pct.
