GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 16 • 27 BY TRAVIS BAUGH TBaugh@Purdue.edu E xpectations stand tall for the men's indoor track team after it received a preseason ranking of No. 14, the highest in program history. Coach Lonnie Greene believes Purdue did its part to back up the ranking with an impressive per- formance in the season-opening Gene Ed- munds Cup over the weekend. "I thought we got everything we want- ed out of the meet," Greene said. "I'm excited to see where we can go from here. (Satur- day's) performance was very, very, very solid." Defending Big Ten champion Chukwue- buka Enekwechi broke his own Lambert Fieldhouse record in the weight throw with a toss of 23.32m (76-6.25), half an inch better than his previous best effort and nearly 12 feet farther than the second-place finisher. "The meet itself was OK," said Enekwe- chi, who also finished first in the shot put. "I'd give it a B-plus in terms of execution. The effort is always there, but in an event as dy- namic as the weight throw you need things to line up. It's a nationally ranked throw so I can't be too upset, but there's definitely more in the tank." Coaches and Enekwechi feel the junior is capable of throwing much farther and break- ing his PR of 77-6, the ninth-longest weight throw in NCAA history. "It was past the facility record, but it wasn't near where Coach (Keith) McBride feels he's really capable of throwing," Greene said. "To see him open up that well, it's exciting to see what's capable of doing. I think he's right where he needs to be at this point in the season." While Enekwechi's performance was expected, Tate Schien- bien's winning effort in the mile was a bit more surprising. Schienbien finished with a converted time of 4:08.26, the nation's sixth-fastest mile time this season and just three seconds off Purdue's school record. Greene feels Schienbien, who focused on the steeple- chase last season, is capable of a breakout season after Sat- urday's performance. "If (Saturday) was any indicator of what the future FAST START Men's track opens season with strong showing Purdue Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has helped Purdue reach the highest ranking in its history, No. 14 to start the indoor season.
