MICHIGAN HOCKEY goals due to captain Andrew Copp's five-minute major penalty. Michigan re- plied quickly to losing the lead on Zach Hyman's set up of Justin Selman for the tying goal. The win propelled Michigan to a weekend two-game sweep of the Gophers, who came into the season as favorites to take the Big Ten conference crown. Top Moment: Longtime head coach Red Berenson achieved his 800th coach- ing win in Michigan's 7-5 victory over Minnesota Jan. 10. Berenson became only the fourth coach in college hockey his- tory to accumulate 800 victories. The victory also propelled Michigan to the top of the Big Ten conference stand- ings. MVP — Forward Zach Hyman: Both on offense and on defense, Hyman, a senior assistant captain, elevated his performance level to become the key cog in the GLI championship, and especially in the two-game sweep of Minnesota. Hyman scored the win- ning goal in Michigan's 2-1 win over Michigan State in the GLI champion- ship game. Hyman followed that per- formance with six points, most of them in crucial situations, in the Wolverines' two victories over Minnesota. On The Rise — Goaltender Steve Racine: The junior put the team on his back and shut down both Michigan Tech and Michigan State in the GLI, allowing only one goal in each game. Racine then backstopped the Wolverines to a 4-3 overtime victory over Min- nesota. Top Freshman — Defenseman Cutler Martin: The freshman not only sup- plied the overtime game-winning goal against Minnesota, but he stepped up and solidified himself as a top-four blue-liner for Michigan. Game to Watch — versus Michigan State Feb. 7 at Soldier Field in Chi- cago: The market for outdoor hockey games may seem over-saturated to many in the sport, but coaches and players alike continue to report on the special nature of playing such games in non-traditional venues. Michigan will take on in-state rival Michigan State in the 2015 Coyote Logistics Hockey City Classic in the home of the NFL's Chicago Bears.
