GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 18 • 12 dering what in the world I just com- mitted myself to." But as he matured, came to un- derstand his role and welcomed the tutelage of coaches Gene Keady and Bruce Weber, Cardinal got better. He attributes part of his success to his parents, Rod and Mary, who instilled in him a drive and moti- vation to be "great" and "different." That's where that work ethic and fearless style of play came in. It's ul- timately what endeared him to fans. "I think I always played extreme- ly hard. I think I always played with a sense of urgency," Cardinal said of his playing days before Purdue. "But I think one of the biggest things was when I got to Purdue, I realized, I needed to turn it up a notch and play at a higher level. In order for me to survive and compete at the Big Ten level, at the national level, I knew I needed to play a little bit different, to do some things differently. "There's a long list of things I don't do very well, but by playing hard and competing, I think it short- ens that list and then I think that ultimately that gives me an edge to play." PAINTER AMONG LEADERS Painter advanced into the second round of the Infiniti Coaches Charity Challenge — and he's in second place with 13 percent of the vote behind Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg. The 48-coach field was cut in half after the first round closed Jan. 25. Round 2 voting runs through Feb. 15. Painter's charity is the Smith Family BReaK Thru Fund. Former Boilermaker and current Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin and former Purdue assistant coaches Steve Lavin and Bruce Weber also were in the Challenge but didn't make the second- round cut. They had "0 percent" of votes, as did 18 other coaches. HUMMEL HURT Robbie Hummel is out 4-6 weeks with broken hand, an injury suffered during a collision against Atlanta Sunday. The Wolves called Hummel's injury a "non-displaced fracture of the fourth metacarpal" on his right hand, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "It just felt weird right away. I knew it wasn't right," Hummel told the paper. "It's really disappointing. It's tough to get in a rhythm, and I felt I have been the last couple weeks. It's frustrating, but there are worse things that could happen. I've been through it before, so it's just a bump in the road. Compared to the ACLs, this is nothing." Hummel had started four con - secutive games before Sunday. KEADY PRAISED ON 'TASTE OF COACHING' In BTN's new series, "A Taste of Coaching With Seth Davis," former Boilermaker coach Gene Keady was the recepient of effusive praise by the four coaches. In the show that aired Jan. 21, Davis had Maryland's Mark Tur- geon, Cal's Cuonzo Martin, Stan- ford's Johnny Dawkins and St. John's Steve Lavin as guests, and the quar- tet spent an entire segment talking about the impact Keady has had on them personally and college basketball as a whole. Considering Keady still works for Lavin, and that Martin talks to the coach "at least a couple times a month," it is not sur- prising that Keady was a hot topic. In one of the lighter moments of the show, Lavin talked about how Keady was working his way into good physical shape and about his diet. "He now has an occasional glass of wine, no more whiskey," Lavin said. Davis, who was a guest on "Gold and Black LIVE" on Jan. 23, said it was critical to get the coaches to a place where they were comfort - able in order for them to be a little more open. The six-episode series was taped in Las Vegas and Fran McCaffery, Tom Izzo and Thad Matta are league coaches who will appear. "You get the coaches away from the lights of the press confer- ence setting and their personali- ties come out," Davis said. "And you could tell, especially with Martin and Lavin, the genuine love and re- spect they have for Keady. "That was real." j To Vote Click Here BIG TEN STANDINGS (Through Jan. 25) Team Big Ten/Pct.
