GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 21 • 23 BY STACY CLARDIE SClardie@GoldandBlack.com T he accomplishments have been seemingly small to this point. Getting off crutches, getting a massively long brace off, being able to put on a shoe and wear regular pants, getting five more reps or a bit more weight added to a leg press, being able to run on an underwater treadmill. But for Danny Anthrop in his recovery from December knee surgery, they're much bigger deals than they appear. They're each a signal of progression, of improvement, of getting closer to returning to the field. And they're piling up at a rate that has Anthrop, arguably the most important piece of Purdue's offense, eying an earlier-than-ex - pected return. "I'm just about two months out (of surgery) and I think ev- erything is going really well," An- throp said Friday. "I've had a checkup with Dr. (Donald) Shelbourne — he wasn't my surgeon but he's the guy we see through Purdue medicine — and he said I was doing really well. Every week, we increase my rehab a little bit each time and I think I'm doing really well. I think I'm ahead of schedule, and that's satisfying for me because I think the worst part of my rehab is over. Now, I'm just working F O OT BA L L : N E W S A N D N OT E S Tom Campbell Danny Anthrop has been rehabbing five days a week from December knee surgery and hopes to return to the field by May. up to be able to run again. I think things are going to go pretty quickly. "I think May is a very realistic goal of when I'll be back. That's what I have my heart set on for my recovery date. I'm looking forward to that." That'd be about a five-to-six month recovery, similar to the speed in which fellow receiver Cameron Posey returned last year and what freshman quarterback Elijah Sindelar is targeting now, too, after also having surgery to repair a torn ACL in December. Sindelar and Anthrop often rehab at the same time and throw together daily — "We're getting more mobile every day," Anthrop said. Sindelar will be able to throw routes to receivers when spring ball starts March 10, a step he's excited about in his recov - ery and a development that has him pro- jecting an earlier full-go return to the field than initially projected. "I wasn't supposed to be cleared to throw until May, but I was actually cleared (in early February), so I'm already throwing now, which is two months ahead," he said last week. "So hopefully by June, which is where I'm supposed to be cleared fully, I'll even be earlier, hopefully May. That's my ultimate goal. "Who knows? I'm going to just keep rehabbing, doing my best and we'll see how fast it goes." Both Anthrop and Sindelar rehab five days a week, spending time on cardio a couple days and strengthening the other three days. The strength issue is the major one for both athletes. For the most part, the ACL is healed, but running won't be - gin until the legs are strong enough. They're recovering from different sur- Anthrop, Sindelar Target May Returns
