38 Issue 72/ 2015 HIPHOP / RNB guestlist.net Both A$AP Ant and A$AP Rocky have come out against rumours that the brains behind A$AP Mob, A$AP Yams, died from a drug overdose. Speaking to VladTV, Ant said that "People keep talking about he overdosed on Xanax and shit like that, lean. No, that's not what happened at all. I don't wanna talk on it. It wasn't that though at all." Rocky, by far the most successful of the collective, explained his point of view by saying "I feel like people feel that way because that's all he's in pictures doing. When you see A$AP Yams you see Hennessey or purple drink, you see some type of controlled substance or illegal narcotic.". Yams, who had a history of drug abuse, specifically codeine and Xanax, and also suffered from sleep apnea, died last month. An official cause of death has yet to be released. Twitter rumours dispelled by rap mogul's friends and collaborators DJ Premier One of the greatest DJs/producers ever to grace the decks What is there to say about the legendary DJ Premier that hasn't already been said? Having helped shape hip hop from the 80s to the present day, Primo has done production work on tracks for Big Daddy Kane, Bun B, Canibus, Common, D'Angelo, Fat Joe, The Game, Jay-Z, Kanye West, KRS-One, Mos Def, Nas, Papoose, Rakim, Royce Da 5'9", Snoop Dogg, The Notorious B.I.G., and Busta Rhymes, among others. As well as this impressive list of guest productions, he was also beat maker and half of the infamous duo, Gang Starr, along with the equally legendary emcee Guru. Since the sad passing of Guru in 2011, DJ Premier's main project has been a collaboration with Royce Da 5'9", known as PRhyme. The duo have only released one album, in December of last year, but it has already received universal critical acclaim and was described as an "instant classic" by AllMusic. Featuring guest appearances from Killer Mike, Jay Electronica, Common, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Slaughterhouse, and Mac Miller, PRhyme is essential listening for all hip hop heads. Even more recently, we've been giving Primo some serious love for his work with UK hip hop outfit (and Guestlist favourites) The Four Owls. It's not just his production talent that's put him at the top of the hip hop tree though; DJ Premier is a renowned live turntablist with fantastic mixing abilities, and hearing a live vinyl set from him should be on any serious hip hop head's bucket list. More @ guestlist.net/rnb-hiphop Bobby Shmurda, everyone's favourite rapper/felon/jailbird, has teamed up with Migos to form the impressive sounding Shmigo Gang. The project has already dropped a mixtape, but this month, this freestyle from the release has been seriously blowing up. It's easy to see why; the track is among the best US rap freestyles we've come across in a while, especially from such a major artist. We all know that the underground cats can spit incredible freestyles, but it's not very often that an artist who's experienced such commercial success shows what they can do with just a microphone and whatever's in their head at the time.
