19 Education and Training Education and Training Overview The large volume of complex clinical material seen in our patient populations allows the Department of Paediatrics to provide state-of-the-art training to multiple levels of learners in the NICU, mother and baby unit, neonatal follow-up clinic, and special pregnancy program antenatal clinic. Dr. Emer Finan co-ordinates undergraduate activities and is the Director of the Neonatal Fellowship Program for the Division of Neonatology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Ann Jefferies is responsible for postgraduate medical education activities. All faculty are involved in teaching during their clinical service and also participate in undergraduate and postgraduate didactic teaching for medical trainees, graduate student teaching, and continuing medical education. Medical education stands on an equal footing with clinical excellence and world-class research. Both Drs. Finan and Jefferies hold graduate degrees in health-care professional education and other faculty are pursuing additional training in medical education. This expertise allows us to play a leadership role in postgraduate medical education and faculty development at the specialty and subspecialty level at the University of Toronto, as well as nationally. Examples of educational initiatives include the neonatal–perinatal medicine OSCE, neonatal–perinatal structured oral examination, and neonatal–perinatal medicine curriculum. Medical education forms the basis of academic and scholarly work for several faculty members who hold research grants and have published in this domain. Resident and Fellowship Training Mandatory rotations in neonatal–perinatal medicine are provided for postgraduate trainees at the specialty and subspecialty level, the majority of whom are enrolled in accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons training programs. PGY1 trainees from the University of Toronto Core Paediatrics program have an 8-week mandatory rotation; PGY1 trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical Genetics, and Paediatric Neurology, as well as PGY3 trainees in Core Paediatrics, have a 4-week mandatory rotation (see Table 3). Under the leadership of Dr. Jefferies, the department reviews and enhances the resident training experience each year. During the past 5 years, dedicated experiences in the Mother & Baby Unit and Labour & Delivery Suite have been introduced; recent educational initiatives include procedural teaching and mock codes. Neonatal–Perinatal Medicine subspecialty residents and fellows spend 1 to 3 months at Mount Sinai Hospital in both years 1 and 2 of their program. Senior subspecialty Neonatal–Perinatal Medicine trainees have an opportunity to do a junior staff month at Mount Sinai. Elective experiences are also provided for specialty and subspecialty residents from other Canadian centres each year (see Table 3). The department continually responds to feedback from the subspecialty trainees regarding their educational experience. Each academic year from 2009/10 to 2012/13 the trainees rated teaching in the department at a score of 4.0 or higher, indicating that it is 'above expectations'. Undergraduate Medical Training and Interprofessional Education As part of their curriculum, fourth year medical students from the University of Toronto attend a day-long session on "The Abnormal Newborn", conducted 6 to 8 times per year. All faculty participate in the didactic and bedside components of the sessions.
