20 Education and Training past 5 years, Dr. Finan has played a lead role in revising and improving this experience. Medical students from the University of Toronto, other Canadian centres, and abroad also undertake electives in the NICU (see Table 4). Students from Dominica, Hong Kong, Poland, Saudi Arabia, St. Maarten, Switzerland, and the UK have come to spend time in the department. The department values interprofessional education. Nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, therapists, and social workers are actively involved in the education of medical postgraduate trainees. Similarly, medical staff provide teaching for other health-care professionals. The department offers a 2-week elective for midwifery students from Ryerson and Laurentian Universities. Physicians also come from all over the world to observe the care we provide (see Table 4) including Australia, Brazil, Egypt, India, Japan, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago. Neonatal Clinician-Scientist Development Program Started by Dr. Shoo Lee in 2010, the Neonatal Clinician- Scientist Training Program provides talented and motivated young neonatologists with the extended research training required for a successful research career in clinical or basic sciences. The program provides competitive salary support, structured mentorship, and protected time for the pursuit of doctoral-level research training at the University of Toronto for subspecialty trainees and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine practitioners wishing to develop a career as a clinician-scientist. We have had 4 members of the department enrol in the program: Dr. Afif El-Khuffash, Dr. Amish Jain, Dr. Sandra Leibel, and Dr. Connie Williams. We would like to congratulate Dr. El-Khuffash and Dr. Williams on completing the program and obtaining staff appointments at the University of Dublin and McMaster University, respectively. Dr. Jain and Dr. Leibel are both currently pursuing PhDs at the University of Toronto in addition to their clinical work within the Department. The International Training Program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine in Shanghai The International Training Program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine is a joint venture of the CNN and the Children's Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai and is endorsed by the Canadian Paediatric Society, with funding provided by China. The program was launched in April 2004 by Dr. Shoo Lee (Canada) and Dr. Yonghao Gui (China), and its objectives were to: (a) establish a national training centre in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine in Shanghai to train a new generation of neonatologists from across the People's Republic of China (PRC), (b) establish national standards for neonatology training in the PRC, and (c) upgrade standards of care and training at the Children's Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai. In addition, this program creates unprecedented new opportunities for collaboration between Canadian and Chinese doctors and hospitals on a wide range of issues. The training curriculum and standards for the program follow those of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada for sub-specialty training in neonatal-perinatal medicine. In this 2-year training program, selected trainees from across the PRC train for a year in Shanghai under 2 Canadian faculty who are posted to Shanghai on monthly rotations year round, followed by a year in a neonatal sub-specialty training program in Canada. To date, the program has trained 64 neonatologists from 30 cities in 24 provinces across China and is considered the top training program in the PRC. Eleven of our former trainees now hold senior administrative positions in their NICU or hospital. Qatar Training Program The Qatar Training Program is a 5-year partnership with the Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar, established by SickKids.
