5 Introduction Introduction It is a pleasure for me to present this report from the Department of Paediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital for the 5 year period from 2009 to 2013. During this period, the department has transformed itself from a unit that mainly provided clinical services into an international leader in neonatal care, a global powerhouse in research, and an innovator in training leaders of the future. This transformation is truly remarkable, and was made possible only through the dedication and selfless contributions of staff members in the department. Congratulations must go to them for their hard work and success. Even more amazing is that during this process, the individuals representing many professional disciplines in the NICU, from physicians to nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, and others, transformed themselves into a cohesive team capable of elevating care to the next level. Indeed, staff morale and parental satisfaction have never been higher. The opening of the Rogers Hixon Human Milk Bank marked a major milestone not only for Mount Sinai but also for our partners at SickKids and Sunnybrook, and the Province of Ontario. Another remarkable achievement is the pioneering and adoption of the Family Integrated Care model, which made parents an integral part of the care team and improved infant outcomes. This is truly revolutionary and has the potential to fundamentally transform the delivery of health care globally. Building on these achievements, our department is now poised to take another major leap forward during the next 5 years. In 2014, we will move into a new state-of-the-art NICU with a single-room design and equipped with a fully electronic health information system that integrates antenatal, obstetric, neonatal, and follow-up care. This will set our NICU apart from all other facilities in Canada and enable us to fully utilize the latest in information technology to further improve patient care, support families, facilitate research, and increase organizational efficiency. We will reposition our research efforts to lead the future wave of neonatal research, while training clinical and research leaders of the future. These are ambitious goals but entirely achievable for the dedicated team at Mount Sinai. Our achievements would not have been possible without the unwavering support and visionary leadership of the Mount Sinai Hospital Executive Team, the Board of Directors, and the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation. Acknowledgements must go to the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, the University of Toronto, and the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for their generous support and partnership. Thanks must also go to the many parent volunteers who spent countless hours helping families in the NICU, and helping NICU staff care for them. Finally, we would like to extend a very warm expression of thanks to everyone who has contributed to our work, either through being a member of our team or through their financial assistance to the department. Dr. Shoo Lee, Paediatrician-in-Chief
