The 6-2, 210-plus-pound Daw- son — he's listed at 205 but said he's more like 212 currently — even played safety for Plant City High School near Tampa. "You know he can play in space," Freeman said. "You know that he can cover. You know he can make a lot of plays." It was actually more of a "rover" position Dawson manned for his high school, free to drop back in coverage like a defensive back, but also to play around the line of scrimmage when need be. Purdue believes Dawson to be fast and athletic enough to do the former already, and soon to be big and strong enough for the latter. Dawson, who said he's run as fast as a 4.63 40-yard dash, is getting big- ger. "I became more physical this year," he said. "I wasn't as big my junior year and this year I feel I got bigger. I was better at getting off blocks and things like that. "I've been working out a lot and eating right. Seventy-one Purdue student-athletes received Academic recognition eclipsing last fall's total of 64 and 2012's total of 46. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners, in at least their second year at their institu- tion and carry a grade-point average of at least 3.0. Women's cross country was second only to football with number of honorees with 19. Women's soccer followed with 16, men's cross country had 11 members recognized and the volleyball team had five. Gwinnett Daily Post Evyn Cooper played running back as a senior but likely will start his Purdue career on defense.
