That seems an unlikely role
for Markell Jones, the running
back who set a state rushing record for
yards in a season in 2014 with 3,536 on
the ground and scored 60 — yes, 60 —
touchdowns.
Yet, Jones willingly took on that re-
sponsibility. With Columbus East en-
joying comfortable second-half leads
much of last season, Jones frequently
found himself on the sidelines as early
as the third quarter. And with little else
productive to do, he'd rush onto the
field during timeouts with water bottles
in hand to give to his defensive team-
mates.
It happened more than once.
"I wasn't surprised at all," dad Jym
Jones said. "He had a good relationship
with his teammates. Even though he
was the star of the team, he acted like
he was just one of the guys."
Now, however, Jones would like to
spend as little time on the sideline as
possible. The Indiana Mr. Football, an
early enrollee at Purdue, is part of a
wide-open field competing to be the
Boilermakers' No. 1 running back.
That he's here early gives him a
