great deal of respect for the guy."
But over the next 20 years, the
battle was fierce. And Keady was up
to the fight. While Knight won a pair
of national titles while Keady was at
Purdue, Keady is the only Big Ten
coach to have a winning record over
Knight, beating him 21 times in 41
games.
And in Mackey Arena, Keady was
dominant, winning 15-of-20 match-
ups, including his last seven battles
with The General.
"We treated it like just another
game," Keady would say after those
wins. But we knew better. One of the reasons Keady
will be forever loved by the Boilermaker fans is that he
stood up to Knight on the court and beat him at his own
game. During that 20-year period, Keady was the shin-
ing point of Purdue's high-profile teams as Boilermaker
football struggled mightily until Joe Tiller came to town
for the 1997 season.
And for that one reason alone, Keady will forever be
held in the highest esteem by the Boilermaker faithful.
