GOLD & BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 4 78 78 GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED she needs production, too. And that's the un- known. Few of the players who need to perform have proven they can do so at this level. That may not be all bad, though, Schuette said. "These kids obviously have done some- thing in their career to get them to Pur- due. Someone saw something in each one of these kids to commit them," she said. "The previous staff saw something. They were good in their high school and travel ball teams, but they haven't got- ten to show that good in awhile. They've been sitting on a bench, waiting for that senior class to graduate. So, now, they have to show people who don't know them like I do if they're good. I think that's their job. But I think the job is to show that they're a team of good. "What we've been talking about is there's no superstar, there are no big names. There are no names that the common Purdue fan really knows, except Burkhardt. So I think that's exciting. They each know that they have an opportunity to make a difference." Until they prove it, the offensive expec- tations have been adjusted. Before last season, Schuette envi- sioned her team being "scrappy." Then it started blasting home runs and scoring at a high rate, so that description changed quickly. This season, though, the do-whatever- it-takes-to-score approach could be para- mount, and players say they're buying in. "We've got speed and we're scrappy, that's how we like to call it," junior short- stop Paris Andrew said. "We'll have our moments of hitting dou- bles, triples and home runs, but our job is get on base, get the runner over, ground ball, score her. It's not making the de- fense do anything wrong, it's just being scrappy, using the speed in what we have. Bunting, that's huge with speed. That's another way to not be selfish. I know ev- eryone wants to hit — there's going to be moments for that — but (it's about) be- ing unselfish and saying, 'My team needs a baserunner, I'm going to bunt and I'm going to get on.' "It's just as important to lay down that bunt that moves the runner as it is for the person to hit the ground ball who scores them." At least Purdue has no doubt who its offense is centered around. Burkhardt is the ultimate do-every- thing hitter. She can hit for average whether she's Purdue As the workhorse, left-handed ju- nior Lilly Fecho will need to build on a solid sophomore season and keep Purdue in games by limiting run-scoring more than ever. 2015 SOFTBALL SCHEDULE Date Opponent Time/Result Feb. 6 San Diego State* L, 0-2 Feb. 6 Cal State Fullerton* L, 3-5 Feb. 7 San Diego State* L, 1-2 Feb. 7 No. 7 UCLA* L, 3-9 Feb. 8 No. 24 Texas A&M* W, 1-0 Feb. 13 LIU-Brooklyn+ W, 7-6 Feb. 13 FIU+ W, 8-1 Feb. 14 Memphis+ W, 10-2 Feb. 14 LIU-Brooklyn+ W, 12-0 Feb. 15 FIU+ W, 8-0 Feb. 20 Oakland@ W, 4-2 Feb. 20 Florida Gulf Coast@ W, 10-2 Feb. 21 Florida Gulf Coast@ W, 3-1 Feb. 21 Stony Brook@ L, 2-3 Feb. 22 Bethune Cookman@ W, 2-0 Feb. 27 Belmont^ 11a.m. Feb. 27 Ohio^ 4 p.m. Feb. 28 Kentucky^ 11 a.m. Feb. 28 Eastern Kentucky^ 1:30 p.m. March 1 Tennessee Tech^ 11 a.m. March 6 Indiana State! 7 p.m. March 7 BYU! 4:30 p.m. March 7 NDSU! 7 p.m. March 8 Northern Iowa! 10 a.m. March 8 Tennessee! 12:30 p.m. March 13 Northern Illinois$ 1:45 p.m. March 13 LIU Brooklyn$ 4:15 p.m. March 14 Quinnipiac$ 9 a.m. March 14 Saint Joseph's$ 1:45 p.m. March 15 Western Michigan$ 9 a.m. March 20 WISCONSIN 5 p.m. March 21 WISCONSIN 1 p.m. March 22 WISCONSIN Noon March 27 RUTGERS 5 p.m. March 28 RUTGERS 1 p.m. March 29 RUTGERS Noon April 1 BALL STATE 5 p.m. April 3 at Northwestern 5 p.m. April 4 at Northwestern 2 p.m. April 5 at Northwestern 1 p.m. April 8 at Indiana 4 p.m. April 8 at Indiana 6 p.m. April 10 NEBRASKA 5 p.m. April 11 NEBRASKA 1 p.m. April 12 NEBRASKA Noon April 15 at IPFW 5:30 p.m. April 17 IOWA 5 p.m. April 18 IOWA 1 p.m. April 19 IOWA Noon April 24 at Illinois 6:30 p.m. April 25 at Illinois 2 p.m. April 26 at Illinois 1 p.m. April 29 INDIANA STATE 5 p.m. May 1 at Minnesota 7 p.m. May 2 at Minnesota 2 p.m. May 3 at Minnesota 2 p.m. Big Ten Tournament (Columbus, Ohio) May 6-9 TBA TBA * So Cal College Challenge + Florida International Tournament @ FGCU/ Four Points by Sheraton Invitational ^ Frost Classic !
